AS I LOOK BACK OVER THE YEARS AND CONTEMPLATE THE TIMES GONE BY,

I CAN’T SEEM TO STOP QUESTIONING MYSELF AND I OFTEN WONDERED HOW.

HOW DID I EVER THINK THAT I WAS REALLY SATISFIED, WITHOUT GIVING OF MYSELF TO HELP OTHERS, I SOON REALIZED MY LIFE WAS NOT COMPLETELY MINE.

YOU SEE I STUMBLED INTO THIS CAREER AS AN ACTIVITIES PROFESSIONAL JUST THINKING IT WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME.

Outcome : The Pulse of a Health Care Center

One only has to open the door and with their 5 senses
can quickly tell as to where is the pulse within

The sounds of music, laughter, and social exchange push silence around,
the sights of grins, twinkles mix well among an active crowd..

The smells of popcorn, chocolate cookies drift about pulling you to seek its source
Add to that are the tastes of coffee, mocha, special teas, or cider to please.

then there is the touch of a welcoming hand quickly kissed or tender hug,

Off in the distance you see a small group drawing and talking about,
in the next room is the library and a history class listens with amazement, however it's personal history that means more than the books,

A door opens returning shoppers are greeted by staff transporting residents to see the visiting pups.in the back hall, family members visit a room showing picnic photos of last weekend As I Walk down the hall, there's volunteer Alice reading the mail, and Fred playing cards with the guys.

A quick galance shows the monthly calendar promoteing a fun future with wonderful things to do and interesting choices.ahead.

My senses tell me I'm some place special, some where, where someone has created multiple opportunities for people to participated in life's wonders, and at their level, need, and interest.

In the middle of the hallway is an office of sorts. Activity Professional at your service.

Well, Here’s the pulse and the promised outcome. .I think I've found the heart. I’ve found a professional who creates an active life for different needs. Thank goodness for this passion for it really makes the world a better place. thank you activity professionals.

MARY SMITH HAD PASSED AND STOOD AT THE PEARLY GATE,
SAINT PETER STOOD WITH GOD TO DECIDE HER ETERNAL FATE.
THEY SAID WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO EARN YOUR WINGS.
SHE REPLIED I DIDN'T REALLY DO ANY SPECIAL THINGS.

TO LISTEN, THE OTHER ANGELS HAD GATHERED AT THE DOOR,
GOD SAID THEN WE MUST ASK THOSE WHO HAVE PASSED HERE BEFORE.
WHO AMONGST YOU CAN SPEAK OF THIS PERSON HERE?
ONE OF THEM SPOKE UP AND SAID SHE WAS A DEAR.

SHE ALWAYS GAVE ME HUGS AND COMFORTED ME,
ANOTHER SAID SHE WAS THEIR EYES WHEN THEY COULD NOT SEE.
ONE OF THE ANGELS SAID SHE GAVE ME A REASON TO WAKE EACH DAY,
FOR GOOD DEEDS AND KINDESS SHE ALWAYS WENT OUT OF HER WAY.

ANOTHER SPOKE OF THE HAPPINESS SHE BROUGHT,
ANOTHER SOPE OF GAMES AND TRIVIA SHE HAD TAUGHT.
MANY MORE SPOKE HER PRAISES AND GOOD DEEDS,
AND TOLD OF HOW SHE SATISFIED THEIR WANTS AND NEEDS.

GOD TURNED TO MARY AND ASKED WHAT HER JOB WAS IN LIFE.
HE SAID I KNOW YOU WERE A GOOD FRIEND, MOTHER AND WIFE.
BUT HOW CAN SO MANY SPEAK OF YOU AS KINDLY AS CAN BE?
SHE SAID I KNOW THEM ALL BECAUSE I WORKED IN ACTIVITIES.

GOD SAID IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO PROVE YOU EARNED YOUR WINGS,

A Tribute to the Activity Professional

Activity professionals, have always been underrated,
“ Nursing is far more important,” nursing professionals have always stated.

“We give the medicine, and take the temperature,”
“ We give the enemas, and take the blood pressure.”

“We call the doctor, when the resident is not well,”
“ We apply the compresses, if the body begins to swell.”

“Twenty-four hours a day, Nursing is always there,”
“ It is Nursing who always provides, the medical care.”

Whereas the Activity professional, has loyalty and dedication,
Nursing truly believes, “they are of most importance and not Recreation.”

It is time for this misnomer, to finally be ended,
And for the Activity professional, to truly be defended.

For the Activity professional, has a most important goal,
Which is to delve into each resident’s mind, body and soul.

And to be able to give, each resident an “inner will”
Is far more difficult, than administering a pill.

What can possibly be greater, than to give each resident a desire to live,
This is something, that no medication can possibly give.

It is the Activity professional, who must know the need of each resident,
From the person who cannot understand, to the one who could name each President.

The process begins with the residents themselves, or one of their references,
To assess and determine, each of their individual preferences.

And to establish an individual activity plan of care,
Whether it be for the resident, who cannot see or cannot hear.

The Activity professional, is always available to answer all questions,
While at the same time, listen to everyone’s suggestions.

“What time is dinner, I want to eat,”
Are we having chicken, pasta, fish or meat?”

“What are we doing today for fun?”
“ Where can I get my nails and hair done?”

“Do you have the music, of John, Paul, George and Ringo?”
“ Can’t we play, just one more game of Bingo?”

“Can my son join me for lunch?”
“ Can we have a Sunday brunch?”

“It is my Mom’s 90th birthday, can we have a private party?”
“ Do you have the reruns, of Laurel and Hardy?”

“Can we go to Atlantic City, for our monthly trip?”
“ Can we have a “male,” come into strip?”

“Can I have an artist, to teach me how to paint?”
“ Can you find reruns, of the TV program, The Saint?”

“Why is Sally, always sitting in my seat?”
“ Did you happen to see, where I left my teeth?”

“Someone stole my money, I know there’s a crook.”
“ Are you sure you saw me, put the money in my pocketbook?”

“Excuse me, did you happen to see my pocketbook?”
“ Can we have a chef, to teach us how to cook?”

“Can you give me a drink, I’m dying of thirst?”
“ Why is Sally, always getting served first?”

“ Can we hear the music, of Ethel Merman and Dinah Shore?”
“ Can we see the reruns, of Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore?”

“Can we have exercise, three times a week?”
“ Can we have a guest lecturer, come into speak?”

“Can we have more movies, with comedy and romance?”
“ Can we do-si-do, by having a square dance?”

“The monthly calendar, when does it come out?”
“ The monthly calendar, what is it all about?”

“English my Mother, does not speak or understand.”
“ How will she know, the monthly activities that are planned?”

Whatever language, a resident understands or speaks,
Receives a calendar, in that language every four weeks.

Presently we have residents from China, Hungary, Spain, France, Russia and Belize.
And our calendar is printed in English, Hungarian, French, Spanish, Russian and Chinese.

Our monthly calendar, is also designed,
Having each resident’s, preferences in mind.

While at the same time, creating programs for each and everyone,
That is stimulating, exciting and filled with laugher and fun.

While at the same time, having a monthly theme,
All being implemented, by our professional Activity team.

December we set out, to “Deck the Halls”
With Chanukah lights, and Christmas balls.

January has a winter theme, “As the Snow Falls,”
Our staff brings the snow, inside our four walls.

Our Dining Room, is filled with crystals of white,
As residents have, their annual snow ball fight.

February is when, “I love you” is said,
And our facility is filled, with hearts and roses in pink and red.

March being Passover, and not eating of the bread,
April has Easter, and looking for the Easter egg.

May is for the planting, of flowers and watching them bloom,
June is the month, we celebrate the bride and groom.

July is the month of stars and stripes, and our annual fireworks display,
This is also the month, we celebrate Independence Day.

August and September, are when we spend a great deal of time outdoors,
Going on trips, to concerts and doing gardening chores.

For the month of October, we have Halloween parties and our annual Oktoberfest.
And for the month of November, we give thanks and remember why we are blessed.

And blessed we are, in every way,
For the quality of life, our residents receive each and every day.

And how each resident, is made to feel so truly special,
Is truly a tribute, to you, the Activity professional.

So for all the work that Activity Professionals do,
This tribute is especially for you.

This poem, in tribute to the activities profession, was written through the combined efforts of the assisted living residents of the Hermitage on the Eastern Shore, many of who have varying levels of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

A Day in the Life Of an Activity Director

Twas the beginning of the day and all through the house,
All the residents are a-stirring and even a mouse!

Good morning, Howdy, and How do you do, are the greetings that meet me,
As I come through the door and look around at the residents I see.

To start my day, at the calendar I glance,
No Bingo today – Not a chance!

It’s something much better, just you wait and see,
A surprise guest with a special talent is who it will be.

A piano player, a singer or an accordion player,
Karaoke music, church choir or maybe an Elvis impersonator.

Talking and chatting around a table of four or five,
A spunky little topic keeps the conversation alive!

Pokeno, Bridge, so many games galore,
It’s for sure that life is never a bore!

Outings to Williamsburg, and the theaters are real treats,
And being all are senior citizens we usually get good seats!

Out for ice cream or just a scenic ride,
It’s always something happening – I just look for a guide.

Shoney’s for breakfast is another treat for us,
We all hop on board the famous Orchard bus.

Church groups, ministers, priests, and preachers,
Bankers, pet therapy, and music teachers.

We come here to live and living it up is what we’re doing best,
We put our activity director to a real test.

To find something for everyone is a hard task for anyone,
With so many talents, interests and hobbies to choose - under the sun.

Wood working, reading, sewing and cooking,
They try to think of everyone and never stop looking.

Contacts, confirmations, and reconfirming is a big job to do,
To find entertainment and schedule them is what I do.

To keep my residents happy is a special career I chose,
How the residents do it all – heaven knows!

They are up before I get here and up when I leave,
Do they ever sleep? Not much I do believe.

So full of energy I sincerely hope they stay,
For I will keep them as busy as I can to help them pass the days.

But when they are unable to attend my program I promise to understand,
I shall sit by their bed, talk to them and hold their hand.

And if the Lord finds fit to call them home to his land,
Forever their memories in my heart will stand.

For those who I have had with me in the activity room,
They will forever linger with me like a beautiful spring bloom.

I love my residents as you can plainly see,
They also bring me great joy and wonderful company!

…..and with this in mind – that’s why I do activities!

She asked me…….?

One day my friend asked me…
Are you happy with your life?
Are you happy with your job?
And it made me think…..
Am I?
I looked at the eyes of Mrs. Delia when I went to work, and my face lit up
She said…. You look beautiful today darling
She tells me that every day
She probably does not even remember my name but she makes me feel good.
1 hour later I met Mr. Soul
He said…… I am going to my son’s for Christmas
He looked like a happy child on Christmas morning right before opening the presents
And I felt happy
In the afternoon I saw Mrs. Miller
She was trying to cut the chicken on her plate
I helped her out, and looked at her while she was enjoying the most basic enjoyment of life “food”
And it made me happy
I had a hard day yesterday
Trying to deal with my own life and the life of the people I care for
But…………. Mrs. Laffite took my hand looked at me and said
I did not like the food today, but my therapist brought me donates
And they were sooooooooooooo good
And I laughed
Yes I work with fragile elderly people
Yes I work with people that may not remember my name
Yes I work with people who make me happy and I get sad when it is time for them to go to heaven.
And yes I am a professional trying to deal with my own life and the life of the people I touch each day

But ask me again
Am I happy with my professional life?

If there is a second life given to me, I will do the same thing again, receipt of the love of my residents is the best part of my professional life
They keep me young with their special ways of youth
They keep me happy with their caring touch

Activity Professionals

What and how important are we?
Are we only arts and crafts? Do we do the same things over and over?
Do those special people we support really benefit?
Is it worth all the work?

We make our plans, shop for supplies, work short staffed
Sometimes doing the work of two or three people
We answer phones, help solve problems, our heads are spinning
Will they show up today?

Today we have four friends and three are sleeping
Yesterday we had sixteen; we can’t seem to say no, to disappoint
Not enough staff, our bus has broken down

Others say “they don’t need to go it’s only arts and crafts” or “we can do our own thing”
“ I don’t want to drive only one client all the way there
Just to come back again a little while later”
“ I can’t give you my staff I have too much to do”

We have worked so hard, we keep our smiles
It’s not about the out come it’s the process that counts
We do our best to have it all work out
Our friends are laughing at our silly attempts

Wait….

Our friends are laughing and smiling
They are not hurting or uncomfortable
They are not watching TV

Our friends are visiting other friends
Doing new things, enjoying our attempts?
Yes! Having a good time!

He’s not hitting the walls with his chair
He’s not putting fingers in his mouth
He’s watching the activities, not wanting to drive in the van

She’s awake today! She usually sleeps all day
He dislikes dirty fingers, but painted that picture without a brush!
She wants to stay and sing, not go home and stay on the couch

If I can improve the life of just one friend for even a short time
Then I have done my job well and will do it again
I will make my plans despite all the fuss
It is worth every minute

Activities at Lakeside

Activities at Lakeside are joyous and fun
They even include gardening under the sun

We have birds, fish and even a cat that live at our home
and many pets come to visit and roam 

We play Bingo of course, which is always a big hit

but we also have sing and swing, which helps keep us fit 

We have gardens and Patio's which we enjoy when the weather is right
but when it is rainy or cold we have nice common rooms where we can gather day or night

We have art classes, sewing classes, cooking and craft class
we have men's group, resident council and even catholic Mass

We play many different games
but it is not about winning its about the friends we gain

We are not just a nursing home
We are our residents only home

We strive to turn the sad in to glad
turn happy what once was mad

We nourish the body, spirit and soul
to keep them comfortable, content and active is our goal

We always wish we could do more
for the residents we so love and adore

As I lay in bed with my hair in disarray
I ponder the thought… what do I do today?
Shall I stay in bed, or get up and go?
I ‘m not sure if I’m wanted…do I just say no?

She says it will be fun, she says it will be great.
Will she go away if I just hesitate?
I don’t feel like going, I feel a bit depressed.
I don’t even feel like getting dressed.

She puts in the effort to ask me though
Everyday she encourages me
“ Come on Mary, Let’s go”
I don’t want to disappoint her another time.
This girl is so sweet and she visits all the time.

She brings a smile to my face each day
With her warm smile and her dedication to say…
“ Good morning Mary, You look great!”
Would you like to join us for coffee and cake?

I think I will go, it sounds pretty good.
I think I will go, I know that I should.
If she didn’t persist and she didn’t keep on
I would just stay in bed all day long.

She has the spirit to lift me up
On days when I’m feeling just fed up
She hugs me as though she’s known me for years
And she’s always there to wipe my tears.
She brightens my day with kind words and cheer
I think I will go for the first time this year!

Ode to Activities

Three cheers for recreation,
That’s hip, hip, hooray!
It’s the activity department motto that states:
“ we make your day!”
This is a tribute from us at Cedar Oaks,
from each and everyone.
Without recreation, ya know, a nursing home
just wouldn’t be much fun.
No hard feeling to other departments,
it takes a village; it’s in the cards,
But our recreation department
is non-stop and goes the whole nine yards.
They motivate, encourage, cajole,
and say everything except “ya gotta”.
You got your bingo, trivia, parties, entertainers,
exercises, movies, groups, yada-yada-yada-yada.
Our nursing home has it all, recreation helps us to bloom.
And, if you’re wilted,
we’ve got the coolest snoezleen room.
Thanks to recreation!
You’re the greatest! You’re the tops!
What about a new drink at he parties?
How about some good old Schnapps!

The art of activities,
That’s so easy some say,
You just weave baskets, play bingo,
It must be nice to play all day.

But they don’t understand,
What activities entail,
Until they hear the story
Of a profession so worth while.

A laugh, a smile,
A story to brighten the day
Getting a resident out of their Room only once,
Helps one go the extra mile.

Striving to make a difference,
Never giving in or admitting defeat,
We are activity professionals,
Full of compassion, understanding, and ideas for retreat.

We are not here for money,
We are not here for fame,
We are here for the love of our profession,
And work hard for the benefits we gain.

Those benefits include a Thank you”,
Or “Can’t wait for the next game”,
Or even “when will you be here again”.
Those words are worth more than fortune or fame.

In nursing homes all workers are teeming
The staff are all nursing and cleaning
Out of the sick bed
and keep them all fed
but activities is what gives their life meaning

Our residents are all just like us
feeling good and full is a must
but deep down inside
our spirits reside
we need hope and friends we can trust

A fun game to forget you are sick
entertainment or activities you pick
When you’re having fun
you feel like you’re young
and that is a pretty neat trick

So what is important to you
something old or an interest that’s new
It is so worthwhile
to make someone smile
And that’s what Activity staff do

What hats they wear

What hats they wear, what hats you ask? Where do you try to start Its so rewarding just to work and mean it from the heart.

There's planning and the calendar, let's not forget the 'state'

They should be here at any time, you hope they think you're great.

The arts and crafts and bookings of the singers and the fun Sometimes at night you leave so late, the work is never done

The paperwork and careplans that you try so hard to write The conferences and phone calls that can last into the night

The task of keeping closets neat and rolodexes clean The yellowed cards with crossed out names, and you know what I mean

The cancellations, calling out, and staff who sit and stare The interviews with little luck from those who seem to care

The boss who always seems to check to see your work is done The maintenance guys who have the tables set exactly right at 1:00

Defending til your dying day you aren't the Bingo queen You're much more than people know, The lives you've touched and seen

The holidays to banks and schools, mean nothing to you now Where you work needs fun and love, you'll make it work somehow

The budget that you try to stay within the right amount There's always one supply or two that you forgot to count

The miracles, the smiles, and the laughter that you see Is all because Activities has helped so lovingly.

You won't become a millionaire in this line of work But you'll be rich deep in your heart, and that's the greatest perk.

Her Name was Mary..

Her name was Mary and this place seemed very scary, not to mention she felt all alone,
You see, her daughter had four children and a husband at home,
She was so busy, she could not leave mom alone!
So her daughter brought her here to live and be cared for,
But Mary was sad and never responded to knocks on her room door,
Until one day, Bobbi met Mary,
Bobbi worked in activities and wanted to please, but knew it wouldn’t be easy for Mary to be set at ease,
As each day went on, and activities were offered, Bobbi invited Mary but she always declined as Bobbi discovered.
Not two weeks later Bobbi tried again, with a smiling face and some kind words whispered,
Mary accepted and to the craft room she whisked her.
They did beads, painting and crafts galore, before too long Mary was peeking out her door,
She was waiting for Bobbi to take her away and enjoy some activities with her each and everyday,
She tried a little of everything and dabbled in this and that,
Bobbi soon realized that Mary wanted to chat,
With all the staff and residents and her roommate too,
Mary opened up and her family noticed it too,
One day at a visit with her daughter and kids, Mary said “Honey I’m fine”, so “What’s new with you”?
Bobbi was happy and noticed Mary was too, to the twinkling in her eye to a craft complete, how she applauded the music by the taps of her feet, when a small word was said when asked when they wed,
Bobbi thought one night as she was leaving for home, small gestures and sounds turn hearts around, activities can cure unhappy faces and turn frowns upside down!

Only making changes if your residents require.
When everyone else says, "Oh, she won't respond."
You know when she squeezes your hand - she's there.
Your MDS's and assessments are always on time.
You note things in a resident no one else can see.
No birthday is missed, no special occasion forgotten.
The building is bright with cheer due to your decorations.
You're the member of the ID team that always makes me smile.
You invite the public in to see our good deeds and
You help us to fix the things in need.
