Handbook on Animal-Assisted Therapy: Theoretical Foundations and Guidelines for Practice

by Aubrey H. Fine (Editor)

Many long term care facilities would like to begin pet therapy programs. If you do not wish to have animals live in your building, we have provided a list of organizations that will come to your facility free or for a very nominal fee. These organizations will either come one time and give a speech about what their services offer or come on a regular basis. Others listed will come once a month or more. In some cases we have listed the national organization or main web site who will put you in touch with the local volunteer chapters affiliated with the organization.

Please note, all Internet addresses are email address unless otherwise indicated.

Please follow your Department of Health Guidelines for visiting animals. All volunteers should follow your facility guidelines for volunteers. It is recommended that all volunteers fill out volunteer applications. All animal records should be kept on file and updated yearly.

This includes:

Shot Record
Health Certificate
Vets License (Copy)

All animals should be on a leash, free of fleas and clean. It is also recommended that animals with claws, be clipped short to avoid skin tears.

All animals should not be less than one year old. Please do not bring animals to clients that have an infectious disease. There is always the possibility that the animal could contract the illness.

It is also recommended that clients be given hand wipes after petting the animals. Handwashing is most important in preventing spread of infection and parasistes. All people volunteers should wash their hands before leaving the facility.

Please also be aware of those residents who are allergic to animals. There is some evidence that residents with Asthma may have an allergic reaction to dander in the fur of cats and dogs.

There are many International, National and local animal assisted therapy or pet therapy clubs.

We have listed the organizations International, National and by state.

Please feel free to contact us if you are aware of any new organizations that are not listed.
